When Google announced Android One program a few months ago, a lot of budget Android device lovers rejoiced hearing these devices are gonna get Nexus like Android Software updates. Many jumped on this promise and ended up buying one of these devices despite these having a low resolution display and a small battery.
Fast forward to Jan 2015, Xolo One, which is not an Android One device, has already got Android Lollipop update, while the officially supported ones ( Karbonn V Sparkle, Spice UNO, Micromax Canvas A1 ) are yet to get any updates. Neither Google, nor these OEMs are yet to announce when these devices will get Android 5.0.
Reason for this delay is probably caused by the partnership these devices have with various carriers in India. Free Software updates via Data Connection ( 2G/3G ) were promised during the launch of these devices. Either these people are yet to figure out how to offer this or Google or OEMs are yet to sort out a deal with these carriers involved. Xolo One, which has almost the same specs as Android One devices got the update since it’s like an ‘unlocked’ device, has no tie up with any carriers. One other device to get Android L update in India is Moto G ( both versions ).
There was a rumor that Android One devices will be updated by the end of January. Hopefully, Google will take necessary steps to update these at least by the end of February, else they are gonna ruin this program, which is already said to be a failure by many in the tech industry.
